[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) will operate an independent film screening event from August to December to support the cultural life of residents, which has been suppressed due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

Hosted by Seoul City and organized by Mapo Central Library and the Seoul Film Commission, the ‘Independent Film Screening’ consists of a total of 10 films, including acclaimed independent films praised by major domestic and international film festivals and critics, as well as selections by the Seoul Film Commission.

It is expected to provide an opportunity for ordinary residents to easily approach independent films, which are usually difficult to access.

The screenings will be held from August to December on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 2:30 PM in the Majung Hall of Mapo Central Library.

In accordance with Mapo-gu’s policy to encourage cultural activities in residents’ daily lives, anyone aged youth and above can watch for free. The scheduled films can be checked on the Mapo Central Library website at the beginning of each month.

Before the official screenings, a special lecture will be held for residents unfamiliar with independent films.

The special lecture, titled ‘Critical Theater: Understanding Independent Films,’ will be held on August 7 at 3 PM in the seminar room of Mapo Central Library, featuring director and film critic Jeong Seong-il as the speaker.

Through this lecture held prior to the official screenings, residents can learn basic film-related terminology and the process of critical analysis after watching short films, thereby enhancing their understanding of independent films.

Residents wishing to attend the lecture can apply through the Mapo Central Library website (Cultural Events section).

The August screenings following the lecture are scheduled as follows: ‘Hello, Minu’ (2020) directed by Ji Hye-won on the 13th, and ‘Relocation’ (2020) directed by Jeong Seung-o on the 27th.

‘Hello, Minu’ tells the story of Minu, a Nepalese man who loved the song ‘Tears of Mokpo’ and devoted his youth to Korea but was forcibly deported 11 years ago.

‘Relocation’ is about five siblings scattered apart who gather to relocate their father’s grave and bid farewell to the patriarchal system of the end of the century.

To prevent COVID-19 during the events, which are scheduled twice a month until December, the district plans to use only 40 seats, 10% of the total 400 seats, and admit attendees on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the event without prior registration.

For more details, please refer to the Mapo Central Library website or contact the Library Operations Team.

Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “This event was prepared to revitalize residents’ movie viewing and the independent film sector, which have been suppressed due to COVID-19,” and added, “We hope for the active interest and participation of residents.”
