Yongsan-gu Childcare Support Center's Non-Face-to-Face Parent Education 'Abundant'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu Childcare Support Center (Director Choi Kyung-sun) is receiving positive responses by offering various non-face-to-face (online) education programs such as ‘Meotjinai Eureka’, ‘Early Childhood Sex Education’, and ‘Appa Nori’.

Meotjinai Eureka is a common parent education program across nationwide Childcare Support Centers, covering topics such as opening thoughts through questioning, dangerous praise, and great praise.

The target audience is parents and caregivers with infants and toddlers in the area, and 100 participants will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis from 10:00 AM on August 10 to 4:00 PM on August 12. After completing the course, if a separate application form is submitted by the 13th, participants can also receive a play kit for their children (growing a positivity plant).

Early Childhood Sex Education informs about the importance of sex education during infancy and toddlerhood, correct sexual knowledge, and methods of sex education by case. Recruitment for 30 participants is until the 18th, but the quota has already been filled.

The education will be held for 2 hours from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on the 20th, and can be attended anywhere with internet access. Participants need to install the video conferencing program (Zoom) on their PC or smartphone in advance. The ID and password for entering the meeting room will be sent via text message the day before the education.

Appa Nori is an online course targeted at fathers with infants and toddlers. It introduces the importance of the father’s role during infancy and toddlerhood, developmental characteristics and play methods for this period, and interaction methods. The capacity is 30 people, and participants will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis until 6:00 PM on the 27th.

The education will be conducted via Zoom from 10:00 AM to 12:40 PM on the 29th, and the ID and password will be notified by text message the day before.

These non-face-to-face courses are completely free. Those who wish to participate can apply for the education through the ‘Center Use Application (Parent Education and Events)’ section on the center’s website.

A center official said, “Due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), individual counseling, language and art therapy, and small group education have been excluded, and most existing face-to-face programs have been canceled,” adding, “We will primarily operate the facility focusing on non-face-to-face courses.”

The center is located on the 2nd floor of Yongsan Dream Tree Complex Town (329 Baekbeom-ro, hereafter Complex Town). It is equipped with Dream Tree Playground (preschool experience room), Baby Flower Playground (infant experience room), Baby Rest Area (nursing room), Kiwoomter (parent self-help meeting space), Jaramter (childcare support program space), computer education room, counseling and therapy rooms, reference room, and education room, and is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays.

Following the closure policy of the Complex Town, the center suspended operations except for some programs from February to July. Facilities where many people gather, such as Dream Tree and Baby Flower Playgrounds, will have their reopening reconsidered later.

Choi Kyung-sun, director of Yongsan-gu Childcare Support Center, said, “The center is doing its best to operate trusted daycare centers, create happy infants, toddlers, and parents, and build a community that raises children together,” adding, “We will gradually normalize facility operations according to the COVID-19 situation.”
