[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] Gimhae City in Gyeongnam announced on the 6th that it has completed the maintenance work on tree planting beds and street flower beds along a 2.7 km section in the Jinyeong and Samgye areas, where narrow sidewalks caused inconvenience to pedestrians.
Protective plates were installed for the street trees along the Japanese cheesewood (Ippopnamu) tree-lined street in the Jinyeong New Town shopping district, and the section of cherry blossom (Wangbeotnamu) street trees in Samgye-dong where roots were deforming the sidewalk blocks was maintained to ensure pedestrian safety.
The sidewalks in the Jinyeong New Town shopping district are about 2 meters wide at most, with 1.2-meter-wide tree planting beds installed sporadically, resulting in an actual passage width of only 80 cm, making it difficult for strollers or wheelchairs to pass. Also, Samgye-dong has a large cherry blossom tree-lined street that provides beautiful scenery in spring, but the narrow tree planting beds frequently caused tree roots to lift the sidewalk blocks.
Accordingly, Gimhae City secured 50 million KRW from the Gyeongnam Province Special Adjustment Grant and installed protective plates for the street trees to effectively expand the sidewalk width in the Jinyeong area to 1 to 1.2 meters. In Samgye-dong, the sidewalk blocks and bicycle paths lifted by tree roots were comprehensively maintained to create a pedestrian-friendly tree-lined street.
Kim Sang-jin, director of the city's Agricultural Technology Center, said, "We thank the city and provincial council members who helped secure the budget and implement the project by listening to residents' voices. We will gradually expand root maintenance and protective plate installation in sections with narrow pedestrian widths to create a safe green city."
