78 Large Planters Installed on the 3rd Floor Skywalk of Daerim and Cheonggye Shopping Centers in Euljiro-dong, Jung-gu

Daerim·Cheonggye Shopping Center Gray Pedestrian Walkway Large Planter Installation

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] "After lunch, buying an iced latte at the ○○○ cafe and taking a walk with my coworkers is a daily joy. It used to be quite bleak with only gray everywhere, but recently, large flowerpots were placed here. It would be even better if it becomes lusher and greener."

This is what Park (28), an office worker near the 3rd-floor skywalk, the twin wings of Daerim and Cheonggye shopping centers in Jung-gu, Seoul, said. When asked who placed these flowerpots, he tilted his head and replied, "City Hall? District Office?"

Recently, more young people are visiting Euljiro, where the old and new Seoul city center coexist, to enjoy various activities, food, and sights. Among them, the skywalk at Daerim-Cheonggye shopping centers has become one of Euljiro's hot spots, with many unique craft beer pubs, cafes, and dessert shops opening there.

Here, Euljiro-dong?not City Hall or District Office?installed 78 large flowerpots, bringing green vitality to the gray walkway.

Jung-gu (District Mayor Seo Yang-ho) established the first-ever Dong (neighborhood) government division nationwide last year and granted budget allocation and execution authority to each dong starting this year.

Accordingly, the Euljiro-dong Community Service Center and residents installed large flowerpots planted with five tree species (▲Zinnia ▲Crape Myrtle ▲Silk Tree ▲Korean Fir ▲Yew) on the skywalk, where visitors have steadily increased. The initiative aims to revitalize the local commercial district by improving the surrounding environment, considering the area's characteristics of having a small resident population but many working and floating populations engaged in commerce.

The flowerpots are placed throughout the approximately 200-meter-long skywalk on both the left and right sides of the 3rd floor of Daerim-Cheonggye shopping centers. By next month, the greenery will become even more abundant, harmonizing with the old signs and worn walls of Daerim shopping center, offering passersby another enjoyable walking experience.

The official in charge at the Euljiro-dong Community Service Center, who is leading this project, said, "Each flowerpot contains the residents' heartfelt desire to help revitalize the local commercial district, which has been struggling due to COVID-19."

Additionally, the 3rd floor of the Daerim shopping center skywalk features an observatory overlooking the Sanlim-dong area, where the old Euljiro scene can be seen at a glance. It is a great spot for taking photos, so they encouraged frequent visits to Euljiro to create joyful memories.

The Daerim-Cheonggye shopping center 3rd-floor skywalk is located about a 5-minute walk from Euljiro 3-ga Station (Exit 6) or Euljiro 4-ga Station (Exit 1). Using the stairs next to the Daerim shopping center main entrance provides easy access to the skywalk.
