[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A woman in her 20s who caused a traffic accident while driving under the influence in Jeju has been fined a large sum of money.
According to the Jeju District Court on the 5th, Chief Judge Seo Geun-chan of Criminal Division 4 sentenced Jo Mo (23, female), who was indicted for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (dangerous driving causing injury) and the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving), to a fine of 15 million won.
Jo was driving on Sinjungnam-ro in Seogwipo City at around 1:15 a.m. on April 22 with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.196% when she collided with a vehicle driven by A (47, female) coming from the opposite lane.
As a result of the accident, A was diagnosed with a concussion and injuries requiring three weeks of treatment, and passenger B (42) also sustained injuries requiring two weeks of treatment.
The court explained the sentencing by stating, "Considering that Jo sincerely reflected on her crime, the severity of the damage was not very serious, and she has no prior criminal record," but added, "The crime is serious because she caused an accident while driving under the influence with a very high blood alcohol level, and she has not reached a settlement with the victims."
