[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it will support the treatment of the injured from the explosion disaster that occurred in Beirut, Lebanon.


WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed condolences on the night of the 4th (local time) via Twitter, saying, "We stand with the people of Beirut who have lost loved ones or been injured in the explosion." He added, "WHO is ready to support the government and medical staff of Lebanon in saving lives."


WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office also tweeted, "WHO is deeply concerned about the impact of the massive explosion in Beirut," and stated, "We are working with partners to respond to urgent needs." The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office is located in Cairo, Egypt, near Lebanon.


Earlier, around 6 p.m. on the 4th, a major accident occurred at the Beirut port when 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, stored in a warehouse for a long time, exploded. Currently, more than 100 deaths and over 4,000 injuries have been reported.
