[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] The Gyeongnam Office of Education announced on the 5th that it will expand the operation of subject-specialized schools to establish a foundation for the high school credit system.

Subject-specialized schools are schools that offer a variety of courses related to focused subjects so that general high school students with talent and aptitude in specific fields can receive specialized education.

From this year, the name has been changed from subject-focused schools to two-subject specialized schools.

The Office of Education started with six subject-focused schools in 2018 and is currently operating 23 subject-specialized schools this year. From next year, it held a public contest targeting general high schools in the province and newly selected 10 schools.

The newly selected subject-specialized schools are ▲4 schools focused on engineering and information convergence ▲4 schools focused on global international and arts convergence ▲2 schools focused on social studies.

The person in charge of the newly designated subject-specialized schools will receive guidance on the preparation direction for operating subject-specialized schools and have a time to share plans through a meeting held on the day.

The newly designated schools will receive 25 million KRW to prepare classrooms for focused subjects.

Hong Jeong-hee, Director of Curriculum at the Gyeongnam Office of Education, said, "By expanding subject-specialized schools, we expect to offer various courses that meet the demands of local students," and added, "We will actively support the solid operation of subject-specialized schools in preparation for the implementation of the high school credit system in the province."
