On the 4th (local time), White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said at a regular briefing that they are monitoring the Beirut explosion, adding, "The incident happened around the time I arrived here, and we are currently monitoring it."
The State Department also mentioned that it is paying close attention to the explosion. In a statement issued by a spokesperson, the State Department said, "We are carefully reviewing reports related to the Beirut explosion and are working closely with local authorities to confirm whether any American citizens have been affected."
The State Department further expressed, "We extend our condolences to all those affected by this explosion and will provide all necessary assistance," but explained that there is no information yet regarding the cause of the explosion.
According to Lebanese authorities, the explosion caused damage to the presidential palace, and more than 400 patients have been transported to hospitals so far. It is also reported that over 10 firefighters are missing at the explosion site.
The explosion occurred at a warehouse located in a port in Beirut. A fire at the warehouse led to a massive explosion, causing damage to buildings within a 10 km radius.
