Busan Port Authority (BPA) announced on the 4th that it conducted a "Special Inspection on Busan Port Safety Management" targeting small-scale waterfront facilities frequently used by citizens since last month, and identified 28 safety hazards, issuing corrective measures.
This special inspection was carried out as a preventive measure against safety accidents such as falls and drowning that could occur due to the recent increase in visitors to Busan Port's waterfront facilities.
The inspection targets were determined based on regular safety inspections and management status, warning signs and caution boards at hazardous locations, aging or damaged safety facilities, and the presence of hazardous materials.
The scope of the inspection, which was previously focused mainly on port facilities within the wharf, was expanded this time to include the identification and improvement of human, physical, and institutional risk factors necessary for ongoing safety.
BPA formed an inspection team composed of internal and external experts, including facility safety diagnosis specialists and integrity citizen auditors, to enhance expertise in facility inspections and focus on discovering improvements from the users' perspective.
BPA plans to establish a "Safety Management System for Busan Port Waterfront Facilities" to prevent recurrence of similar cases, and complete related institutional improvements by the end of this month, including preparing a hazard diagnosis checklist to facilitate regular safety inspections on site.
Nam Ki-chan, President of BPA, said, "We will continue safety inspections and facility improvements to create a Busan Port where citizens can use with peace of mind."
