[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Two hikers in their 30s were struck by the open cargo door of an Army Special Forces Command bus driving on the Junggansan Road in Jeju, resulting in one death and one serious injury.
According to the military and police on the 4th, at around 8:19 a.m., near the entrance of Hallasan Gwaneumsa on Jeju City’s 1st Sanrok Road, A (30, Gyeongnam) and B, who were walking along the shoulder, were hit by the open right cargo door of a Special Forces subordinate unit bus driving on the adjacent road.
As a result of the accident, A was transported to a nearby hospital but died, and B sustained injuries to the wrist and pelvis and is receiving inpatient treatment.
The police believe the victims were hiking the Hallasan Gwaneumsa course when the accident occurred.
B told the police during the investigation, "While this bus was driving straight from Gwaneumsa in Jeju City toward the Aradong direction road, the open cargo door encroached on the shoulder and struck me and A, who were walking facing each other on the shoulder."

At the time of the accident, about 30 soldiers who had completed summer training were on the unit bus, which was heading to Jeju Airport to return to their original base.
The military estimates that the cargo door, which was closed when departing, opened while driving, but the driver did not notice and continued driving, leading to the accident.
The military and police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident with the driver and others involved.
