[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Lee Gwan-su (37), a member of the Gangnam-gu Council, who is accused of refusing to comply with a breathalyzer test request after a drunk driving accident, has been referred to the prosecution.
On the 4th, the Suseo Police Station in Seoul announced that they had sent Lee to the prosecution without detention on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving and refusal to take a breathalyzer test) with a recommendation for indictment.
Lee is accused of drunk driving inside an apartment complex in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, around 2:40 a.m. on the 11th of last month, during his tenure as chairman of the Gangnam-gu Council, and colliding with four parked vehicles in succession. He is also accused of refusing the breathalyzer test requested by the police officers who arrived at the scene of the accident.
The police applied for an arrest warrant for Lee, but the Seoul Central District Court dismissed the warrant on the 23rd of last month. The reason for the dismissal has not been disclosed.
Lee was elected as the chairman of the Gangnam-gu Council in July 2018, becoming the first member from the Democratic Party of Korea to hold the position. He attempted to run for re-election in the 8th term's second half chairman election last month but reportedly gave up his candidacy due to the aftermath of this incident.
