"Bagel is Toasting" 5G Robot Delivers When Ordering via Baemin App

[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina] "The bagel is on fire." When ordering food through the 'Baedal Minjok' application, a world where autonomous delivery robots based on SK Telecom's 5G Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) deliver the food is becoming a reality.

On the 4th, SK Telecom announced that it will promote business cooperation with Woowa Brothers using 5G MEC and smart robots. The plan is to build a new concept unmanned distribution system by combining SK Telecom's 5G edge cloud technology with Woowa Brothers' smart robot delivery service.

First, the two companies decided to upgrade Woowa Brothers' outdoor autonomous delivery robot 'Dilly Drive,' which operates based on the LTE network in the Gwanggyo area of Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, to a 5G MEC and cloud-based delivery service. SK Telecom's 5G edge cloud is a distributed cloud service that installs cloud data centers at exchange stations and base stations, drastically reducing the physical time and distance required for data processing.

By integrating this, it is expected that more precise autonomous driving will be possible for Woowa Brothers' operating 'Dilly Plate,' indoor autonomous inter-floor delivery robot 'Dilly Tower,' and outdoor autonomous delivery robot 'Dilly Drive.' SK Telecom added, "Since June, we have been conducting tests applying 5G MEC to 'Dilly Drive,' achieving significant improvements in autonomous driving stability and remote control efficiency."

Through this agreement, the two companies plan to strengthen related services so that customers can safely receive goods in contactless situations. They intend to simultaneously improve delivery convenience and reduce costs by deploying delivery robots in areas difficult for vehicles to enter or having robots perform tasks during times when delivery personnel cannot visit directly.
