On the 1st, when a heavy rain warning was issued across Seoul, sewage overflowed from a manhole cover near Gangnam Station in Seoul, covering the nearby sidewalk with muddy water. [Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] On the 1st, heavy rain fell across Seoul, causing casualties.
According to the police, around 12:30 PM that day, an elderly man in his 80s was swept away by a rapid current in Dorimcheon, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. He was rescued but later died. The police who responded to the report performed CPR after rescuing him, but he passed away. The police are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
On the Dorimcheon walking trail, the river suddenly swelled, isolating 25 people who were rescued about an hour later. Firefighters who responded to the report safely rescued them using ropes and other equipment.
In the Gangnam Station area, photos and videos of overflowing water due to the heavy rain circulated on social networking services (SNS). The photos show manhole covers opened with sewage backing up or muddy water covering the sidewalks up to ankle height. The Gangnam Station area is low-lying and has experienced similar incidents during past localized heavy rains.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, heavy rain warnings are in effect for Seoul, Gyeonggi, Yeongseo in Gangwon, and northern Chungnam. As of 7:10 PM that day, many areas showed a lull, but the KMA forecasted that rain clouds would thicken again after 9 PM, bringing more rain. Until the morning of the 2nd, some areas may experience localized strong winds, thunder, lightning, and heavy rain up to 80 mm per hour.
The KMA advised, "Special caution is required for facility management, lowland flooding damage, and traffic safety on rainy roads."
