[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] The government has begun discussions on concrete implementation plans for the ‘AI and Data-Based SME Manufacturing Innovation Advancement Strategy.’
On the 30th, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups held the 11th AI and Manufacturing Data Strategy Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Strategy Committee) at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul, where they discussed the establishment plan for the AI SME Manufacturing Platform (KAMP), which serves as the core foundation of the strategy.
KAMP refers to an integrated platform that collects, analyzes, and utilizes manufacturing process data, supports AI solution development, and combines data infrastructure with a network of AI experts, universities, and research institutions, playing a role in supporting SMEs’ use of AI.
The Ministry plans to select a private cloud service provider as the first step in building KAMP this year and support the construction of datasets for key equipment such as computer numerical control (CNC) machines and presses, which are widely used by SMEs in the root industry sector, as well as provide expert consulting and solution demonstrations for AI solution adoption.
At the Strategy Committee meeting, PosFrame (Posco ICT), Nexplant (Samsung SDS), Predix (GE), Mindsphere (Siemens), and other domestic and international manufacturing platforms presented on their areas of application, data collection, storage, utilization methods, and characteristics. The committee focused on discussing how these could be applied to KAMP, which is being promoted by the Ministry.
During the discussion, committee members emphasized that the infrastructure built by the Ministry should provide an environment where various manufacturing platforms can operate and that functions suitable for domestic manufacturing sites should be discovered and serviced to provide practical help to SMEs. They also noted the need to devise continuous technical support plans with platform developers to ensure SMEs face no difficulties in utilizing the platform.
Earlier, on the 23rd of this month, the government announced the ‘AI and Data-Based SME Manufacturing Innovation Advancement Strategy’ as the first follow-up measure of the Korean New Deal at the 11th Emergency Economic Central Countermeasures Headquarters Meeting and the 1st Korean New Deal Ministerial Meeting. This strategy presented a blueprint for Smart Manufacturing 2.0, which upgrades the existing smart factory support projects.
Going forward, the Strategy Committee plans to continuously discuss concrete implementation plans for key projects of the advancement strategy, including My Manufacturing Data, 5G+ AI Smart Factories, and Digital Clusters.
