[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Citizens walking on the street in Chongqing, China, were captured falling into a suddenly appearing large sinkhole.

According to the British tabloid Daily Mail on the 28th (local time), a large sinkhole suddenly appeared on a road in the Wulong district of Chongqing the previous evening.

Surveillance camera footage of the incident shows the ground suddenly collapsing, and two women walking on the road instantly falling into the sinkhole below.

The two women were soon rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where they were reported to have sustained minor injuries.

According to Chinese media, local authorities, based on initial investigations, believe the sinkhole was caused by a landslide due to heavy rain, and further related investigations are underway.

This accident occurred amid ongoing flood damage around the Yangtze River (Changjiang) area, which has lasted for two months.

According to Xinhua News Agency and others, four people were reported dead by 4 p.m. the previous day as heavy rain continued in Chongqing.

As the low-lying areas of Chongqing were submerged by the swollen river, more than 4,300 residents were evacuated to safe locations.

Since June, Chinese authorities estimate that at least 142 people have died or gone missing due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rain, with over 45 million people affected.
