Naver Revamps Personal Information Usage Service... "Strengthening Control Over One's Own Data"

Disclosure of the Date of Consent for Personal Information Collection and Third-Party Provision

Naver Revamps Personal Information Usage Service... "Strengthening Control Over One's Own Data"

[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] Naver announced on the 29th that it has revamped the 'User Personal Information Usage Status Service' to strengthen users' control over their personal information.

The Personal Information Usage Status Service, provided by Naver since 2013, is a personalized service that allows users to view at a glance the details of personal information collection and usage, third-party provision status they have consented to, collection purposes, and information-providing companies.

Through this revamp, in addition to the information previously provided by the Personal Information Usage Status Service, the date on which users consented to personal information collection and third-party provision is now additionally disclosed. Users can also easily proceed with 'withdrawal of consent' for personal information collection and third-party provision across all Naver services. This is a one-stop service that covers everything from checking the status of personal information processing to withdrawing previously given consent, and it is the first attempt among domestic IT companies.

Naver has been recognized for significantly enhancing users' right to access personal information by providing customized personal information usage status based on users' service usage behavior, a first in Korea. It was introduced as a best practice in the 'Online Personal Information Processing Guidelines' published in 2018 by the Korea Communications Commission and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA).

Jin-gyu Lee, Naver CPO·DPO, said, "The significance lies in being able to provide users with world-class control over their personal information through this revamped Personal Information Usage Status Service, which has been prepared for over a year. We will proactively strive to enhance the rights of data subjects along with personal information protection."

Meanwhile, Naver plans to guarantee even the 'right to data portability' by adding features that allow users to select and download personal information-related details.
