Installation of storytelling-type guide signs reflecting the history and craftsmanship of Mullae-dong's metal manufacturing industry... A 5m tall vertical sculpture to become a representative promotional symbol of Mullae-dong
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) installed storytelling-type guide signs on the 24th to enhance the pride of small manufacturers in Mullae-dong and to convey the history and tradition of the metal manufacturing industry.
Mullae-dong is a key area in the urban regeneration revitalization project around Gyeongin-ro in Yeongdeungpo, characterized by a unique coexistence of small manufacturers who have long been engaged in machinery and metal manufacturing and young cultural artists involved in creative activities.
The district explained that the guide signs were created to inform people about the unique regional characteristics and the history of the metal manufacturing industry in Mullae-dong, to boost the pride of small manufacturers, and to invigorate the area both internally and externally.
To reflect the opinions of the small manufacturers, who are the actual mainstays of the area, several meetings and consultations were held, and expert advice was sought. The final design was decided after passing the review of the district’s Urban Design Committee in May.
The guide signs feature graphic icons symbolizing the steel, machinery, and metal industries, depicting the current state of Mullae-dong. At the center, a sculpture symbolizing precision machine parts was added and installed, embodying Mullae-dong’s determination to lead the future metal manufacturing industry.
The guide signs were produced in two designs and installed near the Mullae Park intersection (439 Dorim-ro) and in front of the GS gas station at Mullae-dong intersection (415 Dorim-ro). They are vertical sculptures measuring 4.5*1m (height*width) and 5.5*1.3m respectively, designed with careful cutting and finishing to prevent pedestrian safety accidents.
Additionally, internal lighting was installed to allow appreciation at night.
The district is promoting various projects to revitalize the machinery and metal manufacturing industry in Mullae-dong and to innovate the industry. An industrial anchor facility that can be used for multiple purposes such as small manufacturer education and promotion is being developed with a goal of completion next year. The ‘2020 Yeongdeungpo Idea Funding,’ which promotes collaboration between young people’s ideas and small manufacturers in the machinery and metal fields in Mullae-dong, is also receiving great response.
Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “Mullae-dong is a place where the history of artisans who played a central role in the national economic development lives and breathes,” adding, “I hope the guide signs become a representative symbol of Mullae-dong that attracts many people’s interest and visits.”
