[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] On the 24th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 25th that it held a residents' briefing session on the direction of establishing the Bukchon Urban Regeneration Activation Plan via online live streaming.
The Bukchon Urban Regeneration Activation Area was designated as a history and culture-specialized urban regeneration activation area on November 26 of last year in accordance with Article 19 of the "Special Act on Urban Regeneration Activation and Support," and the urban regeneration activation plan project began on February 4.
Through the Bukchon urban regeneration activation project, Seoul aims to develop urban regeneration content to preserve and improve the residential environment of hanok, create a living experience space utilizing historical and cultural resources, and establish sustainable management plans to preserve Bukchon's unique historical landscape. The Bukchon Urban Regeneration Support Center, which will comprehensively support the urban regeneration project, has been operating since April.
After the residents' briefing session, the city will collect residents' opinions until March next year to establish the urban regeneration activation plan, and after hearing opinions from the city council in April, consulting related organizations, and reviewing by the Urban Regeneration Committee, the Bukchon Urban Regeneration Activation Plan is scheduled to be announced around June.
Yang Yong-taek, Director of Regeneration Policy Planning at Seoul City, said, "Bukchon is the only hanok village in downtown Seoul where history and culture are alive, so we will promote the urban regeneration project to practically help Bukchon residents by preserving Bukchon's unique landscape and harmonizing tourism without infringing on the lives of residents."
