[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Six works by Dongseo University students who challenged the ‘Red Dot Design Award,’ one of the world’s top three design competitions, swept the ‘Winner’ titles.
This competition, along with Germany’s IF and the USA’s IDEA, is a global design contest that started in Berlin, Germany in 1955 and is the most prestigious design competition with the longest history and influence worldwide.
Dongseo University’s Industry-Academic Cooperation Leading University (LINC+) Development Project Team announced on the 22nd that the ideas of students who completed the ‘Convergence Capstone Design’ have achieved great success by winning awards at the global competition and advancing to technology transfer and commercialization.
The results of the ‘Idea Practice’ capstone design course, conducted through the convergence of professors and students from the College of Design and the Department of Software, saw six works selected as winners in the ‘2020 Red Dot Design Award (Red Dot Award: Brand & Communication Design)’ category.
This year’s winners are Lee Chan-yang, Kang Da-hyun, Noh Ha-rin, Kang Dae-gyeom, Kim Hyun-ji, Kim Ryun-kyung, Lee Soo-yeon, Ha Soo-jung, Kim Hye-yeon, Shin Ho-yeon, Kim Na-young, Kim Na-hyun, Lee Yu-rim, Choi Soo-jung from the College of Design, and Park Jung-hoon, Kim Do-heon, Kim Min-su, Choi Hyung-moon, Ryu Hyun-tae, Song Hae-young, Kim Woo-sung, Song Seong-heon, Kim Hyun-tae, Lee Jae-heon from the Department of Computer Engineering.
Since 2015, Dongseo University students have had a total of 13 works selected as winners at the Red Dot Award over six years, achieving results unmatched not only by domestic universities but also by universities worldwide.
The Red Dot Design Award is recognized as one of the world’s top three design competitions along with Germany’s IF and the USA’s IDEA. It is known as the ‘Design World Cup’ that every design major aspires to win at least once in their lifetime.
In the 2020 competition, 6,992 works from 45 countries worldwide competed, judged by 24 world-class creators and design experts. Over the past five years, Dongseo University students have competed with designers worldwide and had a total of 13 works selected as winners.
The award-winning works are listed in the 2020 Red Dot Brand & Communications Design Yearbook and introduced worldwide through online platforms and exhibitions.
Awardees are registered as Red Dot International Members, gaining various benefits and opportunities to interact with Red Dot winners worldwide.
Among the award-winning works, ‘Safety Tail’ was inspired by the fact that the biggest cause of accidents in tunnels is the failure to maintain a safe distance. The sensor attached to the Safety Tail detects passing vehicles and emits a red light. This work was designed to clearly inform drivers whether they are maintaining a safe distance.
Awardee Kim Hyun-tae said, “Since this was a project with students from other departments, there were difficulties due to different perspectives, but we worked with passion for a long time and achieved good results.”
