[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] As the UK government hinted at suspending the extradition treaty with Hong Kong and criticized human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Chinese government warned that it would retaliate if interference in its internal affairs did not stop.
On the 20th, Wang Wenbin, the new spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, "The UK has violently interfered in China's internal affairs," adding, "China strongly condemns this." He urged, "China calls on the UK not to continue down the wrong path," emphasizing, "China will definitely take a firm counterattack against interference in its internal affairs."
Spokesperson Wang also rebutted British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab's emphasis on human rights violations in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, calling it "pure fabrication and slander." Regarding the UK's allegations of forced sterilizations in Xinjiang, he claimed it was "complete nonsense." Wang reiterated the Chinese government's position that the Xinjiang issue is not about human rights or religion but concerns violence, terrorism, and separatism.
Earlier, on the 19th (local time), Foreign Secretary Raab criticized the oppression of the Uygur ethnic minority in China and expressed his intention to suspend the extradition treaty with Hong Kong. Raab is scheduled to announce these details in the House of Commons on the 20th. In response, Liu Xiaoming, China's ambassador to the UK, immediately appeared on BBC and condemned the UK's move as "completely wrong," warning of retaliatory measures.
