[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Innovative Education Local Government Council (Chairman Lee Dong-jin, Dobong-gu Mayor) held a joint declaration with the Presidential National Education Council and the 2020 first half regular general meeting at Dobong-gu Office on the 16th to promote future education.


The Innovative Education Local Government Council (hereinafter referred to as the Council) started in 2018 with the slogan "Education that changes my life, innovative education created by residents" with 31 member cities, and currently has 53 member cities, demonstrating concrete plans and practical capabilities to enhance local educational capacity through educational governance.


At this general meeting, about 50 heads and officials of member local governments attended, and discussed cooperation plans for establishing a future education system and promoting local educational autonomy and decentralization together with Kim Jin-kyung, Chair of the National Education Council.


Through presentations of cases related to improving regional educational capacity by each member city, they decided to share school-village cooperation projects nationwide and strengthen exchanges and cooperation between cities.


They also made a joint declaration with the National Education Council to promote future education based on the common goal of building educational governance for community cooperation based on resident participation.


This joint declaration contains efforts for the launch of the National Education Commission to establish a future education system by realizing an educational ecosystem where schools and villages coexist for the happy lives of all citizens including children and youth and a sustainable society, and to build a foundation for resident educational autonomy through the creation of learning and growth village communities.


Kim Jin-kyung, Chair of the National Education Council, said, "Our society is currently facing uncontrollable risks such as infectious diseases like COVID-19, mass unemployment, and the normalization of environmental problems, and we must respond to the national demand for a better safety net for education and future society." To this end, he said, "Today, when the National Education Council and the Innovative Education Local Government Council join hands for the safe future lives of citizens and children through education in villages and schools, it will be a very meaningful first step."


Lee Dong-jin, Mayor of Dobong-gu and Chairman of the Council, said, "Amid many concerns about the direction of education after COVID-19, it is an important time for our local governments to discuss the future of 'local education' and predictable crisis response methods," adding, "Despite difficult conditions, we have prepared a place to gather together."
