Online Voting Held on the 15th ... Professor Ryu Jang-su Ranked 2nd
Appointed by the President to Serve a 4-Year Term as University President
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] In the election for the 7th president candidate of Pukyong National University, Professor Jang Young-su (張瑛秀, 55) from the Department of Maritime and Fisheries Management was elected as the first priority candidate, and Professor Ryu Jang-su (柳將秀, 58) from the Department of Economics was elected as the second priority candidate.
In the third and final runoff vote of the 7th president candidate election of Pukyong National University held online on the 15th, Professor Jang received a converted vote count of 338.57 votes (52.2%), securing first place. Professor Ryu came in second with 309.82 votes (47.7%).
A total of 994 people participated in this election, including 579 professors, 363 staff members, 18 teaching assistants, and 34 students.
Professor Jang graduated from the Department of Fisheries Management at Busan Fisheries College (1988) and earned a Ph.D. in Fisheries Management from the Graduate School of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology in Japan (1994). Since 1995, he has served as a professor in the Department of Maritime and Fisheries Management at Pukyong National University and has held positions such as Dean of the College of Fisheries Science, member of the Liberal Education Curriculum Operation Committee, and Director of the External Affairs Headquarters.
He has served as an evaluator for the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, and currently holds positions such as Policy Planning Committee member under the President, member of the Agriculture and Fisheries Subcommittee of the Special Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Areas, and Policy Advisory Committee member for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
Professor Ryu graduated from the Department of Economics at Kyungpook National University (1984) and earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the Graduate School of Seoul National University (1993). Since 1995, he has been a professor in the Department of Economics at Pukyong National University and has served as Director of Planning, President of the Korean Regional Employment Association, Policy Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of Education, member of the Presidential Committee on Balanced National Development, senior member of the Busan Regional Human Resources Development Committee, and Chair of the Minimum Wage Commission. Currently, he serves as Chair of the University Structural Reform Committee of the Ministry of Education and as a selection and evaluation committee member for the 4th phase BK21 project.
Professor Jang, who was selected as the first priority candidate, said, “We will turn the unprecedented COVID-19 era into an opportunity for university development and further enhance the university’s competitiveness,” adding, “In particular, we will strengthen education and research support policies so that university members can take pride in being a top university equipped with creative convergence education and research capabilities.”
The Pukyong National University Presidential Appointment Recommendation Committee will promptly announce Professors Jang and Ryu as presidential candidates after receiving the vote count results from the Nam-gu Election Commission, and then notify the current president of the selected candidates. The notified president will recommend these candidates to the Ministry of Education as the 7th president candidates of Pukyong National University at least 30 days before the expiration of the current term.
The newly appointed president of Pukyong National University will serve a four-year term upon appointment by the President of the Republic of Korea.
