[Asia Economy Reporters Wondara and Jeon Jinyoung] Jeon Hae-cheol, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, was elected as the Chairperson of the Intelligence Committee for the first half of the 21st National Assembly.
On the morning of the 16th, Speaker of the National Assembly Park Byeong-seok announced after the vote at the plenary session held at the National Assembly, "Out of 177 votes, Representative Jeon received 176 votes and was elected as the Chairperson of the Intelligence Committee."
In his acceptance speech, the newly appointed Chairperson Jeon said, "I will strive to transform South Korea's intelligence agencies into competitive and truly national interest-oriented intelligence organizations that can prepare for future changes in information demand environments."
He continued, "In particular, since the inauguration of the Moon Jae-in administration, the National Intelligence Service has undergone many changes, such as abolishing domestic intelligence departments and completely severing ties with domestic politics through organizational restructuring. However, institutional and legislative completion has not yet been achieved," adding, "I will work in the National Assembly to accomplish genuine reform."
Meanwhile, members of the United Future Party did not attend the plenary session that day. Chairperson Jeon expressed, "I deeply regret and feel sorry for the United Future Party's absence," and added, "It is clear that the 21st National Assembly has many tasks to accomplish. I hope that results can be achieved through compromise and consultation."
