Last Year, 717,000 Departures... The Highest Since 2000 Trends in International Population Movement (2000~2019)

[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] Last year, the number of people departing the country reached the highest level since 2000. On the other hand, the number of arrivals decreased, resulting in a net international migration (arrivals - departures) population inflow that dropped by 124,000 within a year.


On the 16th, Statistics Korea announced the 2019 international population statistics containing this information.


According to the data, the number of international migrants (with a stay period exceeding 90 days) in 2019 was 1,467,000, a decrease of 13,000 (-0.9%) compared to the previous year. The number of arrivals was 749,000, down by 69,000 (-8.4%), while the number of departures increased by 55,000 (8.4%) from the previous year to 717,000, marking the highest level since 2000.


The net international migration was a net inflow of 32,000, which is 124,000 less than the previous year. Domestic nationals' net international migration recorded a net inflow of 16,000 men and 3,000 women. Foreign nationals' net international migration showed a net outflow of 1,000 men and a net inflow of 14,000 women.


Looking at international migration by foreign nationality, compared to the previous year, Thailand's net inflow decreased by 32,000, and China shifted from a net inflow (19,000) to a net outflow (43,000).


Regarding the composition ratio of major countries' arrivals by residence status, China ranked highest in employment (25.9%), overseas Koreans (25.4%), and short-term (21.8%). Compared to the previous year, overseas Koreans increased by 3.2 percentage points, while short-term decreased by 6.1 percentage points. Vietnam ranked short-term (35.9%), study/general training (26.9%), and permanent residence/marriage immigrants, etc. (23.4%). Compared to the previous year, short-term increased by 7.1 percentage points, and study/general training decreased by 9.9 percentage points. Thailand ranked short-term (88.1%) and employment (10.0%).
