President Moon's Approval Rating Drops Significantly Among Women and Those in Their 30s
Democratic Party at 35.4%... Lowest Since Second Week of October Last Year
United Party at 31.1%... Narrowest Gap Between Two Parties Since Founding
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his administration has shown a 'death cross' phenomenon, where negative evaluations surpass positive ones. Notably, this is the first time in 20 weeks since the fourth week of February that negative evaluations have led positive evaluations beyond the margin of error. It is analyzed that allegations of sexual harassment against the late former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon and evaluations of the government's real estate policies have had a decisive impact on President Moon's approval rating.
According to Realmeter's survey conducted on behalf of tbs from the 13th to the 15th, the positive evaluation of President Moon's administration dropped by 4.6 percentage points from the previous week to 44.1%, Realmeter announced on the 16th. Negative evaluations of the administration rose by 5.2 percentage points from the previous week to 51.7%.
Looking at detailed categories, the decline was significant among women and those in their 30s. Women recorded 42.8%, down 7.9 percentage points from the previous week, and those in their 30s recorded 43.1%, down 13.9 percentage points. Those aged 70 and above (32.1%) and those in their 50s (45.6%) also fell by 7 percentage points and 5.9 percentage points, respectively. By region, Seoul dropped by 6.0 percentage points, Daegu-Gyeongbuk by 5.1 percentage points, and Gyeonggi-Incheon by 4.6 percentage points. By ideological inclination, the centrist and conservative groups saw declines, and by party support, the Justice Party supporters showed a significant drop.
The Democratic Party of Korea's approval rating also fell sharply. In party support, the Democratic Party recorded 35.4%, down 4.3 percentage points from the previous week. This is the lowest since the second week of October last year (35.3%). The decline was led by Seoul, Gyeonggi-Incheon, those in their 30s, and progressive groups.
On the other hand, the United Future Party rebounded, rising 1.4 percentage points from the previous week to 31.1%, regaining the 30% range. As a result, the gap in support between the two major parties narrowed to its smallest since the founding of the United Future Party. It is also the first time since the party's founding that the support gap between the Democratic Party and the United Future Party has fallen within the margin of error. The United Future Party's support rose significantly in the Chungcheong region, Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (PK), and among those in their 30s and 70s and above. The Justice Party recorded 5.8%, down 0.1 percentage points, and the People's Party recorded 5.0%, up 2.1 percentage points.
This survey contacted 32,131 voters aged 18 and over nationwide, with a final response of 1,510, resulting in a response rate of 4.7%. The sampling error is ±2.5 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. For more details, refer to the Realmeter or Central Election Survey Deliberation Commission websites.
