[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] To address the basic academic achievement gap caused by the lack of face-to-face learning opportunities, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 16th that it will operate the "Elementary Basic Academic Achievement on(溫)&on Vacation Intensive Class."

The on&on Vacation Intensive Class is a program that provides customized learning support to students to reduce the basic academic achievement gap caused by the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). It is mainly conducted for 1st and 2nd grade elementary students, and for 3rd to 6th graders, intensive support is provided for about 1 to 2 weeks during the vacation for students who wish to participate. The period is about 1 to 2 weeks starting from August.

The vacation intensive classes will be operated by 562 public elementary schools according to their school situations using the budget for the Basic Academic Achievement Responsibility Guidance System at each school. Teachers or learning difficulty specialists will provide 1:1 customized lessons in basic Korean language skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well as basic mathematics. The attendance rate must comply with the standard of maintaining one-third or less of students attending school, and a budget for quarantine activities will also be allocated. If additional budget is needed, the education office plans to support up to 2 million KRW.
