[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Eight candidates for the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) will deliver their policy speeches over three days starting from the 15th (local time) at the WTO General Council. Yoo Myung-hee, Korea's representative and Director-General for Trade at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, is scheduled to give her policy speech on the 16th.
On the day, the WTO Secretariat announced the order and schedule of the candidates' policy speeches. The order of speeches follows the order of candidate registration. On the first day, the 15th, among the eight candidates, Mexico's Jes?s Seade, who registered first, Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Egypt's Hamid Mamdouh will present and respond to questions from member countries. Afterwards, each of these candidates will hold a press conference for 30 minutes.
Korea's representative Yoo Myung-hee will deliver her policy speech and hold a press conference on the 16th along with Moldova's Tudor Ulianovschi and Kenya's Amina Mohamed. On the last day, the 17th, presentations by Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Mazyad Altwaijri and the United Kingdom's Liam Fox are scheduled.
The WTO Secretariat stated that after a two-month campaign period, the election process will be completed by early November at the latest. Previously, current Director-General Roberto Azev?do announced his resignation at the end of August.
