[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] It has been confirmed that the police began a preliminary investigation on the 15th regarding the Seoul Metropolitan Government's installation of a memorial altar for the late Mayor Park Won-soon during the ban on gatherings due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The Seoul Namdaemun Police Station stated, "On the 13th, a citizen filed a complaint through the National Petition System accusing Acting Mayor Seo Jeong-hyeop and other senior Seoul city officials of violating the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act, and we have started a preliminary investigation."
In February, the Seoul Metropolitan Government prohibited gatherings in Seoul City Hall Plaza and nearby areas through the 'Seoul Metropolitan Government Official Notice.' However, a memorial altar was recently set up in front of Seoul City Hall and its vicinity. It is known that some citizens filed a complaint through the National Petition System accusing Acting Mayor Seo Jeong-hyeop, Administrative Deputy Mayor Kim Tae-gyun, and unidentified Seoul city officials who oversaw the funeral of violating the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act.
The police stated that they are currently reviewing the legal aspects of the case. Once the legal review is completed, they are expected to investigate the facts related to the installation of the memorial altar with the complainant and Acting Mayor Seo.
