Busan Office of Education to Offer Over 50 Courses at 14 Locations Including High Schools and Universities from August 17 to 22
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education will operate a 'High School Summer School' for first and second-year general high school students at five high schools and nine universities in the Busan area for one week from August 17 to August 22 during the summer vacation period.
This summer school selected 55 courses in various fields such as science, forensic science, engineering, social studies, mathematics, arts, foreign languages, and physical education through the first round of screening, and after receiving student applications, about 50 courses will be finally opened and operated.
About 50 course operators, composed of university professors and high school teachers, will select students by reviewing applicants' self-introduction letters by the 24th. During the summer school operation period, student-centered classes of around 15 to 24 hours will be conducted.
This year, considering the COVID-19 situation, the number of participants per course will be minimized for selection. Accordingly, competition for course applications is expected to be fierce compared to previous years.
The Office of Education has been operating summer and winter schools since 2011 for various subjects that are difficult to open at individual schools, such as experiential learning and inquiry, experiments and practice, discussions and debates, essay writing, arts and physical education, and career and job experiences.
Byun Yong-kwon, Director of Secondary Education, said, “The summer school is meaningful in that it is operated in cooperation with universities and local communities to establish a foundation for the high school credit system to be introduced from 2022,” and added, “Students' completion of summer school activities is recorded in the creative experiential activities section of the school life record and is used as evidence for career activities.”
