Workshop, Restaurant, and Cafe Owners Conduct Classes Themselves to Enhance On-Site Experience
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) is operating a job experience program called ‘2020 Time for a Vocation’ for adult residents and local workers.
The district is offering a total of 15 courses including woodworking, pottery, leather craft, rattan craft, barista, cooking, baking, automobile maintenance, and interior design, with 4 to 10 sessions per subject from the end of last month until the end of October.
The courses are conducted in workshops, restaurants, cafes, cooperatives, and lifelong learning centers while adhering to COVID-19 prevention guidelines such as temperature checks, mask-wearing, disinfecting and ventilating classrooms, and filling out checklists.
Most of the business owners at the course venues serve as instructors, adding a sense of realism. Tuition and some material costs are free, and some courses offer evening and weekend classes.
The district announced that all 100 spots for the 15 courses were filled within three days on a first-come, first-served basis, with about 50 people registering as waiting applicants, showing high enthusiasm for this job experience program.
This program also provides small business owners struggling due to COVID-19 with opportunities for lectures and promotion, boosting their morale.
The district plans to continue operating such programs so that residents can explore their aptitudes and preferences and consider changes in future careers.
Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, stated, “We hope that the ‘Time for a Vocation’ program will help people continue lifelong learning, gain vitality in daily life, and plan for the later stages of their lives.”
