[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] It has been claimed that if the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) spreads again this winter in the UK, more than 100,000 deaths could occur.
According to local media on the 14th (local time), the UK Academy of Medical Sciences stated this in a report commissioned by Sir Patrick Vallance, the government's Chief Scientific Adviser. Thirty-seven scientists and professors participated in the preparation of this report.
According to the report, under a "reasonable worst-case scenario," if the COVID-19 infection rate rises again, it is estimated that 120,000 people will die in the UK from September this year to June next year.
In particular, hospital admissions and deaths are expected to peak in January and February next year. The report did not consider deaths in nursing homes or the community in the death toll.
A government spokesperson said, "The report's content assumes a 'worst-case scenario' where the government takes no action and is not a forecast," adding, "The virus is currently under control through joint efforts, and necessary preparations will be made to prevent a second wave."
