[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Go Dallyeong] On the 14th, the Dementia Safety Center in Jangsu-gun, Jeonbuk announced that it is operating the ‘Memory Keeper Classroom’ shelter to prevent the worsening of dementia among elderly dementia patients.
According to the Gun Dementia Safety Center, to prevent COVID-19 infection, the program is conducted every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in morning and afternoon sessions while strictly adhering to infection prevention rules such as disinfecting and ventilating the center, providing hand sanitizers, and measuring body temperature.
At the shelter, various programs are offered including cognitive activities such as reality orientation, reminiscence therapy, memory, and cognitive stimulation therapy through specialized brain exercise materials, as well as singing favorite songs and performing rhythmic movements to the songs enjoyed by the elderly.
In particular, handicraft activities such as making cupcakes, Gaya relic cookies, lucky pouch air fresheners, and mini gardens provide a sense of accomplishment and confidence, as well as the joy of gifting to family and acquaintances, making these the most popular programs receiving enthusiastic responses.
Additionally, for the safety of dementia patients, the shelter checks blood pressure, blood sugar, and medication adherence for participating dementia patients to monitor their health status, and is equipped with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) to prepare for any emergency situations.
A gun official stated, “Through the shelter program, we expect to improve the quality of life for dementia patients by preventing severe dementia, reduce the caregiving burden on families by protecting dementia patients during daytime, and help provide rest for both dementia patients and their families. We will prevent social isolation and loneliness of dementia patients by providing specialized cognitive programs and care to prevent dementia deterioration.”
