[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Won Hee-ryong, Governor of Jeju, who is considered a leading opposition presidential candidate, officially announced his intention to run for president on the 14th in Jeju.
On the 14th, Governor Won held a press conference at the Jeju Provincial Government Communication Meeting Room and said, "I am preparing to run for the next presidential election," adding, "I am currently in the stage of planning what vision and program to pursue and with whom."
He stated, "The presidential election clock is speeding up after the April general election," and "Once the vision for the presidential run is finalized, I will officially inform the residents of Jeju."
Governor Won had officially declared his presidential candidacy in an interview with media from other regions at the end of May. This is the first time he has officially announced his candidacy in Jeju. Regarding criticism of neglecting provincial administration, he said, "When I took office, I promised to devote myself to provincial administration and to dedicate all my capabilities to addressing the urgent issues facing Jeju and establishing a foundation for future growth. That promise remains unchanged," but added, "The national crisis and political crisis cannot be said to be unrelated to our Jeju provincial administration."
