[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Min Jun-young] A couple in their 40s raising two children in unsanitary conditions was arrested by the police.

On the 14th, the Gwangju Nambu Police Station announced that they have detained and are investigating Mr. A (43) and his spouse on charges of neglecting child-rearing (child neglect).

The couple is accused of failing to properly care for their 7- and 9-year-old siblings while raising them amid piles of garbage in a house in Nam-gu, Gwangju.

According to the police investigation, the interior of their multicultural family home had a strong foul odor due to garbage not being cleaned for a long time, and maggots were even found among the trash.

It was also reported that the couple sometimes did not provide meals to the siblings on time or skipped them altogether.

However, no signs of physical abuse were found.

The siblings were under the management of a child protection agency.

After repeated requests for correction went unheeded, the agency judged that they could no longer entrust the children to the couple, reported the matter to the police, and separated the siblings.

The police plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the case involving Mr. A and his spouse.
