2 PM at Cheongwadae Yeongbingwan: 'Korean New Deal' Comprehensive Plan Report Meeting... Hyundai Motor's Chung Euisun, Naver's Han Seongsuk Explain Green New Deal and Digital New Deal
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] "It worked when we tried." Gaining confidence from overcoming Japan's export restrictions and responding to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), President Moon Jae-in plans to present a blueprint for South Korea's future through a new project called the Korean New Deal.
The 'Korean New Deal' comprehensive plan national report conference, held at 2 p.m. on the 14th at the Blue House State Guest House, is an event directly presided over by President Moon and is expected to be recorded as the most important event of the year. This is because it relates to the foundational policies that will influence not only the 4th and 5th years of President Moon's administration but also the governance of the next president.
Yoon Jae-kwan, deputy spokesperson of the Blue House, explained, "The Korean New Deal is a national power consolidation project. It is a project to achieve an early recovery from the COVID-19 economic crisis, create a large number of jobs, and ultimately transform South Korea into a leading country by combining the government's catalytic role, the proactive role of businesses, and the energy of the people."
If the Korean New Deal successfully achieves a smooth landing based on national interest and support, President Moon's governance will gain momentum. This is why the Blue House has taken care to ensure that this event does not remain a government-led event. It has been prepared as an event involving not only the Blue House, government, and ruling party but also the business community, labor sector, related industries, and citizens.
Deputy Spokesperson Yoon said, "This is not a government-only project. At the Korean New Deal national report conference, labor, management, civil society, political parties, and government will gather in one place," adding, "The heads of the five major economic organizations including the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Korea International Trade Association, Korea Employers Federation, Korea Federation of SMEs, and Korea Federation of Medium-sized Enterprises, as well as the chairman of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, will attend." If the attendees support the Korean New Deal in their respective fields, it could lead to a synergistic effect.
At the event, President Moon's keynote speech is scheduled to be delivered live for about 10 minutes. The keynote speech is expected to include the core contents of the Korean New Deal, such as large-scale job creation. Another highlight of the day will be the video messages delivered by Chung Eui-sun, Executive Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, and Han Seong-sook, CEO of Naver.
Executive Vice Chairman Chung and CEO Han are expected to present their views on the Green New Deal and Digital New Deal, respectively. The Green New Deal and Digital New Deal are the two main pillars of the Korean New Deal project. Their presentations are expected to convey what the Green New Deal and Digital New Deal envisioned by President Moon mean to businesses and how they can be realized as actual projects.
The event will also feature presentations by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Hong Nam-ki and Cho Jeong-sik, Policy Committee Chair of the Democratic Party of Korea. Deputy Prime Minister Hong will explain the comprehensive plan of the Korean New Deal, and Policy Chair Cho will discuss the representative projects of the Korean New Deal.
What distinguishes the Korean New Deal from previous Blue House events is that it is not a one-time event. The contents announced on this day are expected to be adopted as core policy tasks of the Moon Jae-in administration going forward. Amid the unsettled political situation following the 21st general election, it also has the effect of shifting public attention from politics to policy.
Deputy Spokesperson Yoon said, "Building on the national confidence gained from overcoming crises by pooling resources, taking the lead in quarantine efforts, and even overcoming Japan's export restrictions, the Moon Jae-in administration will surely succeed in the Korean New Deal by consolidating national power through cooperation among labor, management, civil society, political parties, and government, as well as voluntary participation by the people," adding, "Together with the people, we will continue the proud history of South Korea that says, 'It worked when we tried.'"
