Major Arterial Roads to Operate at 50 km/h, Secondary Roads at 30 km/h
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Nosik] Namwon City, Jeonbuk, has stepped up efforts to reinforce safety facilities such as traffic signs and road surface markings in line with the changes to the Safe Speed 5030 policy.
On the 13th, the city announced that, following the opinions of the Traffic Safety Facilities Review Committee, it is replacing speed limit signs, marking speed limits on road surfaces, and installing warning signs for enforcement equipment, among other safety facility modifications.
The 'Safe Speed 5030' policy aims to reduce the likelihood and severity of traffic accidents caused by vehicles and protect vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists by lowering speed limits to 50 km/h on major city roads and 30 km/h on other side streets.
According to the revision of the Road Traffic Act Enforcement Rules, this will be implemented nationwide starting April next year.
The city plans to operate major arterial roads such as Chungjeong-ro, Yocheon-ro, Hwangjuk-ro, and Gyoryong-ro at 50 km/h, while areas such as school zones, residential areas, and commercial districts will have a speed limit of 30 km/h.
A city official stated, "We hope that the implementation of Safe Speed 5030 will lead to a reduction in traffic accidents and fatalities, thereby realizing a safer city," and added, "We urge all citizens to strictly observe the revised speed limits for traffic safety."
