Gangdong-gu, Youth Volunteer Activities Also Conducted Non-Face-to-Face in the Untact Era

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) will operate an 'Untact Youth Volunteer Program' for middle and high school students on the second Saturday of every month starting in July.

This program is a non-face-to-face volunteer program designed to allow youth to participate safely due to difficulties in face-to-face volunteer activities caused by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

The untact volunteer program is conducted in real-time using a video conferencing system with youth who wish to volunteer.

Volunteer lectures are held at the 'Gangdong e-Studio' established by Gangdong-gu, and students can participate simultaneously from their homes via smartphone or laptop using the video conferencing app (Zoom).

The program will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month until the COVID-19 situation ends. The target participants are middle and high school students residing in Gangdong-gu, with 20 participants per session.

This volunteer activity program is 'Making a Coloring Book to Overcome COVID-19,' where volunteers receive video lessons on how to create coloring books at home, and once completed, the books will be delivered to elderly people struggling emotionally due to COVID-19.

The July program, held on the 11th, will be piloted in cooperation with Gangil Middle School. The district plans to identify various demands of students interested in volunteering and gradually improve and expand the online volunteer program.

Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10 a.m. on the 1st of every month via the 1365 Volunteer Portal or consultation phone.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “We have launched a non-face-to-face volunteer program to provide youth with volunteer opportunities and encourage their social participation even amid COVID-19,” adding, “I hope this will be a meaningful time to support and encourage each other who are exhausted by COVID-19.”
