New Korean New Deal Government-Party Promotion Headquarters Established...Meeting of Related Ministers Attended by Ministers of Science and ICT, Industry, Environment, and Labor
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in has arranged a strategic meeting for swift policy decisions on the Korean New Deal and will personally preside over it once or twice a month. A party-government task force to promote the Korean New Deal will also be newly established.
Kang Min-seok, Blue House spokesperson, stated on the 12th, "A new 'Korean New Deal Strategic Meeting' has been launched and will operate to secure strong momentum for the Korean New Deal. The strategic meeting will be run on a whole-of-government basis," adding, "Just as the President personally presided over the Emergency Economic Meeting, President Moon plans to directly chair the strategic meeting once or twice a month to make prompt and forceful decisions on important matters related to the Korean New Deal."
Spokesperson Kang explained, "To support the strategic meeting, a party-government collaborative body called the 'Korean New Deal Party-Government Task Force' will also be established," and "The task force will be jointly led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Hong Nam-ki and Democratic Party Policy Committee Chair Cho Jeong-sik."
The Korean New Deal Task Force will operate on two pillars: the meeting of related ministers and the Democratic Party K-New Deal Committee. The related ministers' meeting and the Democratic Party K-New Deal Committee will each perform their respective roles and collaborate within the task force framework.
The meeting of related ministers, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, will include Minister of Science and ICT Choi Ki-young, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Sung Yun-mo, Minister of Environment Cho Myung-rae, and Minister of Employment and Labor Lee Jae-gap. The Democratic Party K-New Deal Committee, led by Chair Cho Jeong-sik, includes Assemblyman Lee Kwang-jae as Chair of the Digital New Deal Subcommittee, Assemblyman Kim Sung-hwan as Chair of the Green New Deal Subcommittee, and Assemblywoman Han Jeong-ae as Chair of the Safety Net Subcommittee.
Spokesperson Kang said, "To practically support the Korean New Deal on the government side, a working support team led by Kim Yong-beom, First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, will also be activated," adding, "On the party side, a planning team led by Assemblyman Jeong Tae-ho will operate. Depending on the agenda, other ministers, lawmakers, or private experts may also participate additionally."
The strategic meeting is planned to be activated within this month after the 'Korean New Deal National Report Conference' on the 14th. Spokesperson Kang said, "At the Korean New Deal National Report Conference held prior to the launch of the strategic meeting, President Moon will deliver a keynote speech clarifying the values, meaning, and direction that the Korean New Deal aims for, while declaring a strong commitment to its promotion."
At the event, Deputy Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki and Policy Committee Chair Cho Jeong-sik are expected to explain the representative projects, expected effects, and tasks for institutional improvement. The report conference will be attended by Democratic Party Leader Lee Hae-chan, Democratic Party Floor Leader Kim Tae-nyeon, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun and cabinet members, Presidential Chief of Staff Noh Young-min, Presidential Policy Chief Kim Sang-jo, and related senior secretaries from the party, government, and Blue House.
Earlier, President Moon announced his plan to promote the Korean New Deal as a national project during the 5th Emergency Economic Meeting on April 22 and a special public address on May 10. Spokesperson Kang said, "Recently, the Korean New Deal has been defined as South Korea's new national development strategy to leap forward as a leading country," adding, "We will now officially report the specific contents and plans to the public."
Meanwhile, a senior Blue House official explained regarding Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Hyun-mi's attendance at the related ministers' meeting, "Other ministers may attend the related ministers' meeting depending on the agenda if necessary," adding, "The four ministers currently fixed are because the Digital New Deal involves the Minister of Science and ICT, the Green New Deal involves the Ministers of Trade, Industry and Energy and Environment, and finally, the Safety Net involves the Minister of Employment and Labor."
