Lotte Mart Sells 'Animal Welfare Certified' Chicken for Chobok Season

[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Lotte Mart announced on the 12th that it will sell ‘Animal Welfare Certified’ chicken to meet the increased demand for health foods during Chobok, the first of the three hottest days of summer.

Animal Welfare Certification is a certification system that labels livestock products that have been humanely raised, transported, and slaughtered according to animal welfare standards under the Animal Protection Act. In Korea, 87 farms have received animal welfare certification. The number of Animal Welfare Certified chicken products at Lotte Mart reached 27 last year, about twice as many as in 2013.

Accordingly, Lotte Mart is preparing a total of 400,000 chickens across all stores for sale until the 15th. ‘Animal Welfare Chicken Stew’ and ‘Animal Welfare Chicken Soup’ are offered at 5,950 KRW each with a 30% discount for L.Point members. Additionally, ‘Young Chicken for Soup’ is sold at 2,520 KRW for L.Point members. Convenience foods such as ‘Royal Samgyetang’ and ‘Nature Ilga Samgyetang’ are also offered at 6,000 KRW each for L.Point members.

Lotte Mart’s premium samgyetang ‘Yorihada Ganghwa Seomgyetang,’ launched last month, is also sold at 7,480 KRW for L.Point members. This product uses ginseng and green whole rice, specialties of the Ganghwa region, and sold more than 10,000 units within two weeks, with home shopping also selling out its prepared stock in one day.

Health-boosting seafood will also be sold until the 15th. Wando live abalone is offered at a 40% discount for L.Point members, and ‘Fresh cleaned live freshwater eel’ is also available.

Yoon Ji-young, head of Lotte Mart’s livestock team, said, “We planned to offer animal welfare certified chicken at an affordable price to mark Chobok,” adding, “As demand for healthy food increases, Lotte Mart will continue to strive to offer products that customers can trust and enjoy with peace of mind.”
