According to the China Earthquake Networks Center on the 12th, the epicenter was located at 39.78 degrees north latitude, 118.44 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 10 km. Tremors were also reported in nearby Tianjin and Beijing, close to Tangshan City where the earthquake occurred.
Tangshan was the site of a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on July 28, 1976, which claimed more than 240,000 lives.
