Seoul District Mayors Including Ryoo Kyung-gi of Jungnang-gu Join the Mourning Procession for Mayor Park Won-soon

During Mayor Park Won-soon's tenure, Ryu Gyeong-gi, who was widely loved as Seoul's First Deputy Mayor, served as Jungnang District Mayor; on the 10th and 11th, Seoul district mayors kept vigil at Mayor Park's funeral for two days, drawing attention.

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The procession of memorials by Seoul district mayors who had close ties with the late Mayor Park Won-soon, including Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, continues.


Seoul district mayors visited Mayor Park’s funeral hall to pay their respects from the morning of the 10th. Seong Jang-hyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, and Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, visited Seoul National University Hospital before going to work on the morning of the 10th. They later completed formal condolence visits.


Mayor Seong wrote on Facebook, “As soon as I heard the sad news of Mayor Park Won-soon, I visited the funeral hall. The connection between Mayor Park and Yongsan-gu, which Seoul City and Yongsan-gu have maintained. The past nine years working in step as mayor and district mayor flashed before my eyes. I cannot believe that the mayor has left us. On this rainy day, Mayor, may you rest in peace.”


Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, who served as the first deputy mayor of Seoul alongside Mayor Park, visited Seoul National University Hospital on the morning of the same day with director-level executives including Administrative Director Im Chul-bin to pay respects at the funeral hall. As a Catholic, he also guided Cardinal Yeom Soo-jung’s condolence visit on the 11th.


Mayor Ryu also posted on Facebook, “I am overwhelmed with grief and sorrow. I deeply mourn the life of the deceased who devoted his entire life to democratization and civic movements and lived for nearly ten years for the citizens of Seoul.”


Mayor Ryu received much affection from Mayor Park. In particular, Mayor Park greatly helped local development by relocating the SH Corporation headquarters from Suseo-dong, Gangnam-gu, to Sinnae-dong, Jungnang-gu, as part of balanced development between Gangnam and Gangbuk areas.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu and a two-term member of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, wrote on Facebook, “Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail... Seoul Science Museum... Life History Museum... Seoul Community Sports Center, etc... These are precious assets of Nowon where your touch and traces remain. We will nurture and develop them well so as not to bring shame. Rest in peace.”


Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, wrote, “I pray for the repose of the deceased who dedicated himself as an administrator and civic activist. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved family who must be deeply saddened by the unbelievable news and to the Seoul family who are plunged into confusion and sorrow.”


Kim Sun-gap, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, posted on Facebook, “I met him a few days ago... Rest in peace. I sincerely pray for the deceased’s soul.”


Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, who served as a political aide under Mayor Park, wrote, “I cannot contain my sorrow over the tragic news of Mayor Park Won-soon. He tirelessly worked for marginalized neighbors and democracy throughout his life. Over the past ten years as Seoul’s mayor, he developed Seoul into a world-class city and devoted himself more than anyone else to the happiness of its citizens. I will never forget his noble intentions. I sincerely pray for the deceased’s soul.”


Meanwhile, Seoul district mayors took turns keeping vigil at Mayor Park’s funeral hall over two days, the 10th and 11th, showing their respect and drawing attention.
