As Demand for Remote Work Grows, Global PC Shipments Surge in Q2

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] With the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), demand for non-face-to-face (untact) services has increased, leading to a surge in global PC shipments in the second quarter.

On the 11th, market research firm IDC announced that global PC shipments in the second quarter were preliminarily estimated at 72.3 million units, an 11% increase compared to the same period last year.

By company, HP showed the highest shipment volume in the second quarter with 18.1 million units, a 17.7% increase. Lenovo Group (17.4 million units), Dell Technologies (12 million units), Apple (5.6 million units), and Acer Group (4.8 million units) followed.

The increase in PC shipments in the second quarter is analyzed to be due to the rise in PC demand as remote work and online classes increased amid movement restrictions caused by COVID-19.

As PC shipments increased, demand for semiconductors for PCs also rose in the second quarter.
