Dongdaemun-gu Installs 10 Safe Walking Routes Including Hongneung Elementary School Commute Paths

Strengthening Pedestrian Safety for Vulnerable Groups Including Elderly, Disabled, and Stroller Users

Dongdaemun-gu Installs 10 Safe Walking Routes Including Hongneung Elementary School Commute Paths Safe walking path established on the school route of Hongneung Elementary School

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) has installed 10 safe walking paths on side streets to improve the walking environment for vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly, disabled, and stroller users.

Safe walking paths are designed with sidewalk block patterns on side streets where the road width is narrow and it is difficult to install actual sidewalk blocks, but where vulnerable pedestrian groups frequently travel. This design visually distinguishes the space.

A district official stated, "It makes it easier for drivers to recognize pedestrians, thereby safely protecting vulnerable pedestrians using the side streets."

Following a pilot installation of a safe walking path last year on Imun-ro 9-gil (Imun-dong), where senior centers and kindergartens are located, the district installed a total of 730 meters of safe walking paths at 10 locations including Hongneung Neighborhood Park (Hongneung Elementary School commuting route).

Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, "We have created safe walking paths so that both pedestrians and drivers can use them comfortably," and added, "We hope this project will enhance the safety and convenience of vulnerable pedestrians and create a comfortable walking environment."
