[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The city of Daejeon has extended the high-intensity social distancing period by two weeks, maintaining it until the 26th.

According to the city on the 10th, the high-intensity social distancing includes closure and shutdown measures for public institution facilities and social welfare facilities in the region, as well as administrative orders restricting gatherings at 3,073 high-risk facilities of 12 types, such as entertainment bars and karaoke bars.

Additionally, administrative measures requiring mask-wearing and compliance with quarantine rules at 10 types of multi-use facilities such as department stores, terminals, and train stations, as well as public transportation including city buses and taxis, are also included and maintained under the high-intensity social distancing.

However, following the results of mass testing of all students at Cheondong Elementary School in Dong-gu, where recent student cases were confirmed, which all tested negative, the city decided to lift the gathering ban at 125 academies, private tutoring centers, and sports training centers in the Cheondong area at the end of the restriction period.

The city also left room for adjusting the social distancing level depending on the spread pattern of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) within the region.

Mayor Heo Tae-jung of Daejeon said, “Recently, an average of 4.3 COVID-19 confirmed cases have been occurring daily in Daejeon. Moreover, the continuous increase in confirmed cases due to small group facilities or additional contacts raises concerns about the spread of the infectious disease.”

In particular, Mayor Heo emphasized, “If the number of confirmed patients exceeds 10 for three consecutive days, or the weekly average daily cases exceed 7, or the proportion of cases with unknown infection routes exceeds 5%, or the management rate within the quarantine network falls below 80%, we will decide on adjusting the social distancing level through comprehensive review.”

He added, “We will decide on raising the level through the tentatively named ‘Infectious Disease Crisis Management Committee (to be newly established)’ composed of experts, and we will strive to manage the COVID-19 response system more systematically through this.”
