[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The mayor of Hamyang County, Gyeongnam, visited the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the National Assembly on the 9th to actively request support for securing national funding for major pending projects, including the relocation of the military base and the improvement project of the Hannam natural disaster risk zone.
On that day, Mayor Seo and senior officials began with a meeting with the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, proposing key projects across Hamyang County in preparation for the post-COVID-19 era and emphasizing the need for active interest and cooperation.
Additionally, to secure national funding for 2021, they visited Seo Young-kyo, Chairperson of the Administrative Safety Committee, Min Hong-chul, Chairperson of the National Defense Committee, Do Jong-hwan, Chairperson of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, who are standing committee chairpersons in the National Assembly, as well as Kim Tae-ho, the local district lawmaker, sequentially explaining the necessity and justification of Hamyang County’s priority projects and requesting active support at the National Assembly level.
Regarding the relocation of the Hamyang military base, one of Mayor Seo’s campaign promises, there is no link to secure national funding, making it difficult to proceed with only the military’s own budget. To seek solutions, he met with Min Hong-chul, Chairperson of the National Defense Committee, explained the current progress, and proposed that the National Assembly actively devise solutions to promote regional balanced development and alleviate residents’ inconvenience caused by the military base stationed in the downtown area.
Next, he met with Seo Young-kyo, Chairperson of the Administrative Safety Committee, explained the natural disaster risk zone (Hannam, Taegwancheon) improvement projects and the disaster-risk reservoirs (four sites) maintenance projects, and requested support to secure the property and safety of the county residents through national funding.
Mayor Seo Chun-soo of Hamyang County stated, “In the second half of the 7th term of the elected government, we will do our best to fulfill campaign promises such as the relocation of the military base and strive for balanced regional development and expansion of cultural spaces for local residents. We will continue active cooperation and coordination with the central government and political circles to promote the development of our county and resolve the poor local financial conditions.”
