[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Geon-ju] The Justice Party announced on the 9th that it had proposed the "Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Act" on the 29th of last month, with Representative Jang Hye-young as the main sponsor.
The Justice Party's anti-discrimination bill prohibits and prevents discrimination in all areas of political, economic, social, and cultural life based on gender, disability, age, language, country of origin, ethnicity, race, nationality, skin color, region of origin, physical appearance and conditions, marital status, pregnancy or childbirth, family and household form and situation, religion, ideology or political opinion, expunged criminal records, sexual orientation, gender identity, academic background, employment type, medical history or health status, social status, and other grounds without reasonable cause.
The Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Act promoted by the Justice Party can serve as a basis to correct all discrimination prevalent in our society. Half of the citizens are women, neighbors include people with disabilities, there are those suffering from poverty, women suffering from gender discrimination, people with disabilities whose lives are constantly denied, sexual minorities, immigrants who must always prove their existence, and youth suffering from hereditary and unfair employment discrimination. This law aims to rectify the widespread discrimination in our society.
Despite repeated recommendations from the UN since 2008 to enact a comprehensive anti-discrimination law, the bill, first proposed in the 17th National Assembly in 2007, has been repeatedly blocked. The political sphere has failed to overcome opposition from some religious groups and conservative organizations, leading to repeated abandonment and withdrawal. The Justice Party has resolved to ensure the enactment of the Anti-Discrimination Act in the 21st National Assembly.
According to a recent National Human Rights Commission public perception survey, 88.5% of respondents supported the enactment of the Anti-Discrimination Act, and in a survey by the Korean Women's Development Institute, 87.7% of respondents supported the law. The Justice Party emphasized that the Anti-Discrimination Act is a "law for all of us" supported by the majority of the public.
The Justice Party plans to focus its efforts and promote various projects to ensure the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Act in the 21st National Assembly. It has proposed a three-party forum with the Democratic Party of Korea and the United Future Party to discuss the enactment of the Anti-Discrimination Act, with the intention of clarifying each party's position and jointly consulting on legislative tasks and directions.
