[Im Hoon-gu's Philmusic] An Unmissable Song in Gus Van Sant's Films

[Im Hoon-gu's Philmusic] An Unmissable Song in Gus Van Sant's Films

What would be the favorite film among Gus Van Sant’s works? The answer may vary depending on taste, but movie fans who pick ‘Drugstore Cowboy’ or ‘My Own Private Idaho’ are likely to be those with some years behind them.

In the early days of his directing career, his films were gatherings of handsome young men. You can see the fresh faces of Matt Dillon, River Phoenix, and Keanu Reeves. ‘To Die For’ features Nicole Kidman and Joaquin Phoenix, who has now become a great actor. The first film where a middle-aged character plays a significant role, rather than youth, is ‘Good Will Hunting.’

If someone asked me what Gus Van Sant’s representative work is, I would unhesitatingly choose ‘Elephant,’ which deals with the Columbine shooting in the U.S., or ‘Last Days,’ which portrays the short life of Kurt Cobain. However, when it comes to film music, ‘Good Will Hunting’ cannot be left out.

This film, which was so popular domestically that it was re-released, is remembered for the outstanding performances of Matt Damon and Robin Williams. In the ending part, Robin Williams’ brief monologue is a scene that shows the entire film in a single phrase.

After reading Matt Damon’s letter, Robin Williams smiles and mutters to himself (at times like this, the Korean phrase “ssik jjoganda” fits better), “Damn kid, imitating me.” Then the end credits roll over the rear view of Matt Damon’s car as it drives away, and Elliott Smith’s ‘Miss Misery’ plays.

Elliott Smith, who sang this song, suffered from severe depression due to an abusive childhood and struggled with alcoholism throughout his life. After becoming known to the world, he lived a life addicted to drugs. This overlaps considerably with the film’s protagonist, who also had an unfortunate childhood.

He sang about his wounded life through folk music. However, unable to adapt to the world, he reportedly committed suicide in a very bizarre way. He stabbed his chest with a steak knife. There are various theories, including a breakup with his lover and his inability to endure the commercialization of his music.

PS: In 1998, he appeared on the Academy Awards stage wearing a suit that really didn’t suit him. ‘Good Will Hunting’ was nominated for Best Original Score. However, the award went to the theme song of ‘Titanic,’ the gaudy lyrics of ‘My Heart Will Go On.’ Damn Oscars.
