[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] In Tokyo Metropolis, Japan, 224 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in a single day.

On the 9th, NHK cited Tokyo Metropolitan officials, reporting that 224 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the metropolis that day. This is the highest number of cases confirmed in a single day to date. The previous record for the highest daily infections was 206 cases on April 17.

In Tokyo, concerns about a resurgence grew as the number of confirmed cases remained in the triple digits for six consecutive days starting from the 2nd. However, on the 8th, the number dropped to 75, below 100, bringing some relief. Then, on the 9th, a sudden surge of 224 confirmed cases raised fears of a second pandemic wave.

Currently, COVID-19 infections are spreading mainly around nightlife districts such as Shinjuku. Tokyo Metropolis has been conducting COVID-19 testing focused on these areas, but the proportion of cases with unknown infection routes has reached 50%, maintaining ongoing concerns.

Tokyo Metropolis urges people to use establishments that have implemented infection prevention measures even when visiting nightlife districts.
