[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] Choi Soo-jung, CEO of Coca-Cola Korea, participated in the ‘Flower Bucket Challenge’ to support flower farmers struggling due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). She joined the campaign upon the recommendation of Lee Jeong-ae, CEO of Coca-Cola Beverages, a subsidiary of LG Household & Health Care.
According to Coca-Cola Korea on the 9th, CEO Choi delivered bouquets to the recipients of this year’s 25th Coca-Cola Sports Awards, which were held individually and non-face-to-face due to the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics caused by the spread of COVID-19, to encourage them.
This year, the unprecedented postponement of the Tokyo Olympics due to the spread of COVID-19 brought great disappointment to athletes who had been working hard for four years toward the Olympics. Additionally, the Coca-Cola Sports Awards ceremony was held individually and non-face-to-face for the health and safety of the athletes, leaving the awardees with some regret as they could not fully enjoy the joy of receiving their awards. To comfort the athletes and send thrilling support, CEO Choi delivered bouquets to about 30 recipients of the 25th Coca-Cola Sports Awards, including the Most Valuable Player Oh Sang-wook (fencing), Excellent Athletes Jo Gu-ham (judo), Kang Chae-young (archery), and the men’s wheelchair basketball national team.
The ‘Coca-Cola Sports Awards’ is the only amateur sports awards ceremony in Korea, started to support amateur sports, which are the foundation of Korean sports development. Since 1995, it has encouraged about 500 athletes and coaches from various sports disciplines.
CEO Choi said, “This year, in addition to the unprecedented situation of the Olympic postponement, the ‘Coca-Cola Sports Awards,’ a festival for amateur athletes, was held non-face-to-face, which may have caused psychological disappointment for the athletes. To help them overcome this difficult time and cheer them on, we delivered flowers. Also, I am glad that Coca-Cola could participate in a small activity to support flower farmers. I sincerely hope that all people in Korea will overcome these difficult times well through precious and happy moments in their daily lives.”
