Seocho-gu 'Non-face-to-face Elementary Physical Education Class' Content Distribution

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seocho-gu (Mayor Jo Eun-hee) has produced and distributed over 20 standard learning content videos for the ‘Seocho Non-face-to-face Elementary Physical Education Classroom’ to support the 1-person-1-sport initiative, which can be immediately used in classes. These were distributed to 24 elementary schools amid difficulties in physical education classes at frontline schools due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), even though students have started attending school with the beginning of the elementary school semester.

Currently, elementary schools have students attending 1 to 2 times a week, which has increased challenges in physical education classes that comply with social distancing and other quarantine guidelines, as well as a lack of content for online physical education classes at home during non-attendance days. This has led to a growing demand for non-face-to-face physical education content.

In response, Seocho-gu has created the ‘Seocho Non-face-to-face Elementary Physical Education Classroom’ with various themes to be used during physical education classes, quickly distributing it to frontline schools and supporting each school to select and utilize only the content they need according to their circumstances.

Frontline schools, which were unprepared for non-face-to-face classes due to the sudden onset of COVID-19, have responded that the learning materials distributed with local government support are like rain in a drought.

“Compared to other subjects, physical education lacked non-face-to-face learning materials, but the video content provided by Seocho-gu made it possible to have fun classes indoors with just simple equipment, and it was great that it could also be used simultaneously on the home learning e-learning platform.” (Teacher at Eonnam Elementary School)

“I was sad because we couldn’t have physical education classes for a long time, but watching the videos and exercising together with friends in the classroom after a long time was so enjoyable.” (5th-grade student at Eonnam Elementary School)

Each school is actively using the physical education content and online home learning videos. Subject teachers have expressed high satisfaction as the content reduces the time and cost involved in conducting physical education classes and producing content, while providing interesting and beneficial materials to students. Some schools have requested continuous additional content distribution in preparation for the prolonged continuation of COVID-19.

The Seocho Non-face-to-face Elementary Physical Education Classroom includes various themes such as play-based physical education using small tools like cups, individual exercises using jump ropes and hula hoops, physical activities using balls and other equipment, and stretching-based posture correction for studying. The content is designed as light, game-like recreational exercises that encourage movement, as well as easy-to-follow barehanded stretching exercises that can be done while seated, allowing enjoyment regardless of gender.

To support this content, the district has built a video content repository where any responsible staff member can access and retrieve necessary materials for classes at any time. A clearly organized content list and explanatory materials are provided to dedicated teachers, enabling easy selection and use of materials needed for various class situations.
